NEW TIME NEW PLACE

This year Room 5 and Room 4 were ready for an exciting new adventure at Martins Bay. The students were looking forward to this camp as much as past years. The teachers had been preparing the class with their S.A.P charts (safety action plan) and were all ready for the tasks that lay ahead.

Thanks to the Y.M.C.A we had a series of great activities, such as mountain boarding, initiative games and archery. Another thanks to Scott and Leon for organising the kayaking and sailing and bringing in a variety of new exiting activities.

Cheers to the parents who helped with transport and supervising with daily meals. A huge thanks to those who stayed in the camping ground over night. We hope they enjoyed it as much as we did.

Medieval Art

The last couple of days room5 have been doing wonderfull art with Mrs Lomas. We used indian ink to create the art. We made it on shiny white paper. I will tell you the process. First we drew our designs on a normal piece of A4 paper. Then we copied them onto the shiny paper. After that we indian inked (that was really fun). I drew a queen sitting on her throne. She had black tied up hair and a gown on. My picture turned out really great. I really enjoyed the art. It was really fun.

Medieval manuscripts

Room 5 has been learning from a great artist.(Mrs Lomas) We have been learning about the Middle ages, so we have done some medeival manuscripts on people that worked in the medeival ages. I chose to do a knight and a horse on its hind legs because they are brave and fight till the death. We used indan ink with bamboo sticks to do black lines. To fill in gaps we used crosshatching.

Guy fawkes

On Saturday night a dazzling display of spectacular fire works. They were amazing. We liked the screamers! There were 3 inflatable rides. The chipmunk slide was massive. There was one that had two long lanes and one person would go in in each lane. You would have a harness around your waist. You would have a certain amount of bungy cords attached to the harness and you would try to get to the very end of the lane to grab a rectanglar piece of velcro. It was extremeley hard.
For little kids there there was a small bouncy castle that looked pretty fun for infants. There was a huge selection of food. We loved the lollies and the raffles were great.
I wish though that some of the teenagers woud be more careful and considerate.

Guy Fawkes

On Saturday the 6th of November we had Guy Fawkes. It was really fun. We liked all the rides but it would be better if there were more. A few people were doind flips and other stunts down the slides though so it was quite dangerous. The fireworks were Awesome, especially the colourful ones. All of the food was delicious but the lollies were the best. We wanted to buy one of the BIG glow sticks but once we got at the front of the line to get one they were all sold out. Next year we hope there will be more rides, cheaper rides, more food and more stalls.

Earthquake Disaster

At 4.30 in the morning, a tragic natural disaster swept over the silent town of Christchurch. The Magnitude 7.1 earthquake destroyed a portion of the historic brick buildings, and terrorized the people of the town.

Concrete was soon turned to mud, and water supplies are becoming a major concern. The Ministry of Health says; “Boiling water for at least three minutes is compulsory, as we yet have to face the fixing of the sewage pipes, along with other damage.”

The fear of other aftershocks forced affected residents to sleep at the Christchurch hall until at least Wednesday. Flights out of the area have been cancelled due to fear of damage on the runway.

Repair costs are estimated at an amount of $2 billion dollars. Heavy rains are also expected to hit Christchurch at 6.30 am today. Railway lines are bent by the affect of the earthquake.

Technology

On the last 2 days of term rooms 4,5 and 6 did a Technology contest. We had to create an interesting but fun board game. We all were in a group of 5. I was with Rhys and Leah from room6 and Claire from room4. We all dicided to make a Kiwi one. The hardest part was making all the questions but overall it was all fun. I learnt lots and lots about the interesting Kiwi and I am sure my team mates did to. My team worked really well with each other and we all made a fun but interesting game about Kiwis. I hope we can do stuff like this in the future.

First the year 7 and 8 teams played hockey. There were 5 teams that participated. After getting some bumps and bruises we finished all the games and went off to get lunch from the tuck shop. Then the year 7 and 8 teams swapped around with the year 4,5 and 6 teams. Now the year 7 and 8 teams had to play soccer. We were better at soccer than we were at playing hockey and we won much more games. Everyone was tired after all our games and we met up at the grand stand and went back to school on the bus. Remembering Corey

Today we talked and wrote about Corey who was sadly killed in an accident last Friday.  He was a very important classmate in Room 5 and we have many great memories of our times with him.  He will be remembered for his cheerful smile and the pleasure he got from his successes. He enjoyed joining in with all the activities the class did at school.

MAKING PAPER

At school some people in our class made paper. The people in our group were Tamsyn,Holly,Rebecca and Michaela. The colour we choose to do it was Violet. We had to make the pulp from recycled paper and put it in a large container with more water.  We used the paper sandwich makers to pick up a layer of pulp.  We turned it onto some cardboard and left it to dry.  Our paper turned out grey.

Anzac day technology challenge

On Friday the 23rd of April years 4, 5 and 6 did a technology challenge. We had to make a poppy as wide, tall and good looking as we can with a small stack of newspapers, some scizzers, 4 a4 pieces of red and black paper, 10 metres of tape and a ball of green string. We got ourselves into teams of five and was given about 45 minutes to complete our poppy. Once all the teams had finished the judges went around and got us to talk a little bit about our poppy and how we made it. There were lots of different designs: some were as high as the roof, some were 3D, some were small but high detailed and some were tall and wide. The judges decided on two "highly recommended" and one overall winner. The first highly recommended poppy was made by Briar Lomas, Eru Craig, Kiarn Couling, Olivia Crookshank and Claire Keven. Their poppy had string for a stalk and the flower was 3D. The second highly recommended was made by Finley Savage, Shanae Woolley, Briar Woolley, Ethan Tischik and Kiarnen Dudding. Their poppy was about 1 metre tall but it was quite high detailed. The winning poppy was made by Daniel Richards, Aimee Stevens, Luke Stevens, Holly Danks and Nyah Railey. Their poppy was quite big and was the widest poppy there. They also cut out all the green they could find in the newspaper and taped it onto the stalk.

Waitangi Trip

It was an early start for the senior classes as we boarded the bus and some cars ready to head to Waitangi.  We needed to be at the Treaty Grounds by 11.30 for our tour.  Mrs Brown and Ngati Kawa welcomed us and we set off to explore.  We listened to Ngati Kawa tell us about the legend of Tane and the forest while seated underneath a large shady tree. We viewed the large waka under cover and learnt how it was made.  We sat on the tree stump that was left after the tree was felled to carve out the waka.  We learnt all about Mrs Busby arriving at the beach and being welcomed by the Maori women and children.  We looked at the flags that fly from the flagpole on the grounds.  We explored the Treaty House and played games that the children in 1840 would have played.  It was a very informative visit and we all learnt a lot. It was time to do some exercise so we set off and found the Waitangi Mangrove Track.  Two hours later it was back on the bus and off to Oromahoe Marae, our accommodation for the night.  Aimee and Alaxis responded to the karanga for us and Mr McNaughten replied to the powhiri.  Next morning we were up early to csatch the 9.30 ferry to Russell.  While one group had a tour through Pompallier House, the rest of us had a swim in the harbour.  We checked out the church with the musket ball holes in the walls before heading back to Paihia and home.  What a great trip!!

In class we did a written test.  Lots of people did really well.
The last test we did was the practical test again.  Lots of people passed quite easily, I got twelve points wich is the highest score you could get.

MAKING SUSHI

Room 5 are learning about Japan with Mrs Williams.
We are learning the language and we sing as well.
This time when she came in we made same sushi.  It was heaps of fun. We made vegetarian, tuna and salmon sushi.  We learnt how to say the ingredients in Japanese.  These are the ingredients:

gohan-rice           kyuuri-cucumber
nori-seaweed      stukemono-ginger
ninjin-carrot        supuun-spoon
sakana-salmon/tuna  nafiou-knife
su-vinegar            satau-sugar

Eeling

One dark  evening my dad and I went eeling. We went down to a friends house. I got five eels with my new line and we put them in the bucket.  It was awesome when the eel was hooked.  It rolled around like a crocodile.  It was difficult to get into the bucket because it was too big.  At home we gutted them, dried them and smoked them.  I took some to school to share with the class.

Making sushi with Mrs Williams

Last Thursday Mrs Williams came to make sushi with us. It was really fun.

Things you need:

Grease proof paper,
Seaweed(Nori) ,
Rice(Gohan) ,
 Vinegar(Su),
Carrot(Ninjin),
Salmon/Tuna(Sakana),
Sugar(Satou),
Cucumber(Kyuuri),
Ginger(Tsukemono),
A knife(Naifu),
A spoon(Supuun)

Method:

First you lay down a piece of grease proof paper on a chopping board, then you put a piece of Nori on top. You then you have to lay down a 1cm layer of rice but leave a small line for sealing up later in the process.Next you put on sakana,(unless you want to have vegetarian)kyuuri and ninjin.Only stick them on down one end and make sure you spread out the vegetables so that the person who has the piece of sushi on the end gets some too. Once all of your fillings are on you can start to roll it up.
To roll it up you grab the end of the paper and roll it.When rolling tuck the paper under then pull it out. Repeat that until you're almost done. The little line you left when sticking the gohan on should still be there so that you can get some water and then press it down. And there you have it SUSHI!!
