The fun run

I was going  to the fun run. There  were some obstacles on the course. I was very fast! at the fun run. We had to run or walk for 50 minutes. After the run we got a free juicie!!!. I was very tired after the fun run and exhausted.

Thanks to Random House Books we have 7 new books for our school library.  They are the books that featured in their Term 1 newsletter and we were fortunate enough to win them in a competition.

Maori Designs

In our studies this term we are researching the different parts of the wharenui.  We have looked at different designs and made our own heke designs for our classroom.  We have been working with Mrs Lomas to draw and transfer our ideas using cardboard layers to give a carved effect on our designs.

Jump Jam

We have a new Jump Jam selection which we are really enjoying.  Jump Jam is led by Room 6 students and the whole school joins in on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, weather permitting!

Recycling Plastics

We have been researching which plastics we can recycle and which plastics we can't recycle.  Most plastics that are labelled with numbers between 1 and 7 can be recycled but not all of them are recycled in New Zealand.  Plastics with code 1 and 2 are used to make all the common items like milk containers, shampoos, detergents, drink bottles and medicine bottles.  They can be put in the recycle bins for the council pick up. Glad wrap and plastic bags are not able to be recycled and they cause problems at the recycle centre if they get stuck in the machinery.  We found that plastic containers that are used in the bathroom and kitchen can be recycled.  We presented our information at assembly.

Paper balloons

Paper balloons are a traditional Japanese game.  The balloons are inflated by blowing through a small hole.  They are then batted in the air and kept afloat for as long as possible before they deflate.  Some of these balloons can last for 20 years if they are looked after carefully.  We practiced our counting while batting the balloon to each other.

Maori Stick Games

Thanks to Elsa who has been working in Room 5 this week we have been learning the correct patterns for Maori stick games.  We will all soon be experts!

Kiwi Kick

It was our last visit from our Kiwi Kick coaches today.  We have learnt a lot of passing, catching and kicking skills that we haven't learnt in other sports.  The final session was today so we  played Aussie Rules in a game, using the right skills.  It was great fun.

Congratulations Nicholas

Room 5 has done it again.  Anne from Ashton Scholastics thought we must be the luckiest school in New Zealand.  Last year Max won the competition and this year Nicholas won it.  The whole class is lucky because again we all received a book to keep.  Today Anne delivered a box of books and a book voucher for Nicholas and his teacher.  We are a class of book lovers so we really enjoyed choosing a new book from the selection.  Thank you Ashton Scholastics.

Waste Minimisation Centre

What an interesting place! Different sights and smells!  Waste in all shapes and sizes.  Lots of examples of recycling.  Lots of examples of people throwing away items that are still usable.
