Recycled magazine Xmas trees
Room 5 have been making Xmas trees using the old magazines that we accumulate at school. They folded each page 3 times to create the trees. They were then sprayed and covered with glitter to make them sparkly. They looked fantastic.

Wastewise certificate presented to Ryan
Ryan accepted the certificate from Shelley, our Wastewise facilitator, at assembly on behalf of the school. Ryan is one of our enthusiastic litter less lunch participators. He always has suitable lunch containers so that he doesn't need to use wrapped food items. The certificate recognizes the school's first year of participation in the contract.

Stacker Cups
Room 5 are practicing their stacker cup skills for the class competition. By the end of the year we hope to have a class champion. Stacker cups are great for improving coordination. Practising the routines improves the speed dramatically. We already have some budding champions.
Butterfly garden
We have been working on the murals and signs for our butterfly garden. Mrs Lomas has used the designs and messages we did last term in the signs and now we are painting them ready to erect in the garden.

Litterless Lunches
Today was the first of our Litterless Lunch Wednesdays. We did pretty well. We had over half the class bringing lunches that were litter free and most of the other students had only 1 item of packaged food in their boxes. We are aiming for 100% success on Wednesdays by the end of the year.
Our Butterfly Garden
Every class at school has a special area they are developing this year as a "Pride Project". We have an area just outside the classroom that is to become a butterfly garden. Unfortunately, we had to pull our huge swan plants out as they were dying and were badly infested with aphids. So we will need to grow some more for the monarch butterflies. Mr Mason kindly delivered us some mulch from his calf pens in the holidays and Mrs Murphy has brought some plants she had grown that attract butterflies so we are beginning to establish our garden. If anyone has plants at home they would like to donate we would be happy to receive them.

Learning the DRS ABC
Today we learnt some very important basic First Aid skills that may one day help us to save a person's life. We learned the doctors ABC. Max was "unconscious" so Olivia talked us through the steps we need to take to help him. We learnt to check for a response and check for breathing. We practised putting people into the recovery position by rolling them towards us. We learnt what to do if a person was not breathing- 30 pushes and 2 breaths until the ambulance arrives or the person we are helping tells us to stop.
Calendar Art
This year we chose a favourite animal to feature on our calendars. We used pastel for the colour work and included a pattern in the background. We used match sticks and toothpicks to give texture. We covered the pastel with dark purple dye to give depth. Then we cut our picture into rectangular pieces, chose a suitable colour for the background and pasted the pieces onto the coloured paper to give a mosaic effect.

Cameron says "Happy birthday'
Drop, cover, hold
Tomarata School were some of the 1.3 million people involved in the Drop Cover Hold campaign today at 9.26a.m. We all dropped and crawled under desks when the bell went and stayed there until we got the all clear. Hopefully we won't have the real thing happen at Tomarata but even if we do we will know what to do.

Room 5- Little Wiggles
Cameron was lucky enough to watch the Wiggles concert last weekend. He particularly liked "Hot Potato, Hot Potato" so he and his class mates performed it at assembly this week.

Limericks
This week we have been writing our own limericks about the animals that feature in our calendar pastel and dye drawings. We looked at the features of limericks and have tried to use the right number of syllables to make the limericks sound effective. We also thought about telling a story and making sure the words at the end of the lines were rhyming. First, second and fifth lines rhyme and lines three and four rhyme.

Visiting Storm at Health Camp
Today Mrs Salt visited Storm at Health Camp. She delivered all the letters from his Tomarata School classmates. She met his teacher and all the other people that work at the Health Camp. Storm gave her a tour around and she had morning tea with him and the rest of his class. After play Storm did his inquiry presentation about the Chupacabra. He answered all the questions people asked about his
inquiry.
We all hope he enjoy the last week of his stay.

Phone a friend
Room 5 feedback from the NZ Playhouse presentation "Phone a friend" was all positive. We loved the huge phone and doing the dance. We agreed that the parents were OTT but they meant well. We learnt to use our mobile phones properly and not to be mean with them. It was a great show.

NZ Ukulele Festival 2012
Room 5 are learning the songs that will be played at the NZ Ukulele Festival in December. Mrs Coop has introduced some of the songs and we will be practising them so we can participate in the festival. We are learning "Pick a bale of cotton", "The lion sleeps tonight", and the "Octopus garden" to start with.
